Tuesday - snow day in DC!

We woke to several inches of new snow. All of the government buildings closed for the day, canceling our tour of the Capitol Building, Library of Congress and the Supreme Court. The Air and Space Museum opened mid morning allowing us to continue with that part of our itinerary. Afterwards, we enjoyed a walk around The Mall and Capitol Hill before taking in the Lincoln Memorial, and the Korean and Vietnam War memorials. Our last stop was the Iwo Jima Memorial.

Monday - Gettysburg National Military Park

Today we celebrate Presidents' Day by focusing a great deal on our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln. We started the day with a drive to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania where we toured the famed fields and hills of the three day battle. It was at this same location, four months later, that President Lincoln would give his famous Gettysburg Address while dedicating the battlefield as a cemetery. Our visit began with a short video in the visitor's center before climbing up into the center of the cyclorama; a 30 foot tall, 360 degree painting of Pickett's charge on the third day of the battle. Our drive around the battlefield was guided by a knowledgeable park ranger who shared lots of great information with us about the battles the took place and the monuments and memorials that stand today to honor the generals and soldiers who fought here 150 years ago. After lunch in the visitors' center, we headed back into DC. Next stop, ... Ford's Theater.
